Often, it can feel like we are behind on getting to where we aspire to be with our life’s goals. I relate to trying your hardest but still not seeing the returns. Naturally, these moments can be heartbreaking and discouraging.
Nevertheless, as any mindset coach would tell you, we often need to reframe our experiences and extract all ounces of positivity from a situation.
Life has a cause-and-effect relationship.
Many may believe in coincidences; however, I am more for design and intentionality. Even when we cannot make sense of our disappointments, failures, and setbacks, they all serve some purpose in the end, even though we may not fully understand them.
I recently watched a presentation by Organizational Psychologist Dr. Benjamin Hardy, explaining a two-minute routine that will change one’s life: journaling.
There is always something to reflect on and be thankful for at the end or beginning of each day.
Dr. Hardy went on to say:
What you focus on expands.
Read that again. Whatever it is that you focus on becomes bigger and bigger. Will you focus on even your tiny victories today?
Here’s why celebrating small victories matters.
1️⃣ Motivation Boost: Recognizing and celebrating your progress boosts your motivation to keep going, even when the road ahead seems challenging.
2️⃣ Positive Reinforcement: Celebrating small victories reinforces positive behaviors and habits, making it more likely that you’ll continue to achieve great things.
3️⃣ Build Confidence: Each small win builds confidence and belief in your abilities, empowering you to tackle more significant challenges with self-assurance.
4️⃣ Gratitude and Perspective: Taking time to celebrate reminds us to be grateful for our journey and appreciate the growth we’ve experienced.
5️⃣ Enjoy the Journey: Life is about more than just the destination; it’s about the journey. Celebrating small victories allows us to enjoy the process and savor the moments.
My experience in celebrating a small win.
In October 2022, I developed fierceness, confidence, and motivation levels I had never experienced before.
This experience taught me many lessons, including how much one can accomplish when one goes all out in pursuing one’s goals. I also learned the power of having a supportive community to help on life’s journey.
I jumped out of my comfort zone and entered a competition and fundraising campaign with FabOver40 and the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
This was no small endeavor for me, who had, until then, avoided every publicity event and even avoided having social media accounts. However, what that competition required was lots of self-promotion and campaigning.
I became my own social media and campaign manager overnight. I created Twitter and Pinterest accounts for the first time to aid in my promotional endeavors. I wrote multiple articles about my participation in this fundraiser and posted them on Medium and LinkedIn.
I posted on Facebook for the first time. I had many “firsts” due to this campaign.
And stepped into the spotlight, I did. Friends and family who knew my love for keeping out of the limelight were most shocked and wondered what transformation I was undergoing.
This competition started with 50K fabulous women and was narrowed down to only 14 after eight weeks. Week after week, I campaigned, sought donations for the NBC Foundation, and solicited votes for myself.
Each time I won my round, it became more than a celebration of a tiny win.
This campaign significantly boosted my confidence and impacted the lenses through which I saw my life. I felt unstoppable, and the other goals I have to accomplish are still fueled today by that same energy and can-do attitude I developed for this campaign.
I became a top finalist and was featured on the FabOver40 website for approximately eight months.
My small network of close families and friends shared my voting link and donated on my behalf, raising more than $40,000 of the $7 million donated to the campaign that year.
The tiny steps I took and stepped out of my comfort zone became one of the most phenomenal and impactful experiences I have ever had.
Final Thought
Start celebrating your small wins.
Practicing gratitude may take effort, especially when your circumstances appear dire. Nevertheless, start with one thing that you are grateful for and gradually increase your list. Journaling is an activity that helps to get your thoughts out of your head. And while some people may practice journaling for 30 minutes or an hour daily, you can begin with even two minutes of reflection and jotting down your thoughts at that moment.
Remember, greatness is achieved one step at a time, and every milestone, no matter how small, is a testament to your progress and potential.
Let’s celebrate together! Share your recent small victory in the comments below, and let’s cheer each other on!
Here’s to celebrating the small wins on our path to a brighter future!
