One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain — Bob Marley.

My Jamaican countryman, Bob Marley, knew something or two about music.
For one, his song Three Little Birds is a simple yet powerful reminder not to worry about a thing as every little thing will be alright.

My favorite type of music, though, is gospel music, and I find the most significant musical pieces that deeply resonate with me in this genre. Outside of my gospel favorites, the first two on my list are highly personal.

1. Perfect — Ed Sheeran
My husband dedicated this song to me on a regular night that became forever special due to his dedication. This song represents our journey.
I found a love for myself
Oh, darling, just dive right in and follow my lead
Well, I found a girl, beautiful and sweet
Oh, I never knew you were the someone waiting for me

Cause we were just kids when we fell in love
Not knowing what it was
I will not give you up this time
But darling, just kiss me slow
Your heart is all I own
And in your eyes, you’re holding mine
Baby, I’m dancing in the dark with you between my arms
Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favorite song
When you said you looked a mess, I whispered underneath my breath
But you heard it, darling,
you look perfect tonight
Well, I found a woman stronger than anyone I know
She shares my dreams, I hope that someday I’ll share her home
I found a love, to carry more than just my secrets
To carry love, to carry children of our own
We are still kids, but we’re so in love
Fighting against all odds
I know we’ll be alright this time
Darling, just hold my hand
Be my girl; I’ll be your man
I see my future in your eyes

2. Wind Beneath My Wings — Bette Midler

I dedicated this song to my mom at my wedding. She sacrificed so much for me and stood in the shadows for years. I wanted to honor her forever with this tribute.

3. You’re Gonna Get the Glory — Tasha Cobbs-Leonard

This song is a testimony that in all things, God will ultimately be glorified in my life. While everything that happens to us isn’t good, the Bible assures us all things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose.

I also went through a dark and challenging period where this song was a daily anthem to remind and assure me that while I was going through the blazing fire and sailing the roughest seas, I’d live to tell that it was worth it and that God would indeed get the glory.

4. So Will I (100 Billion X) — Hillsong Worship

This is a powerful song about the supreme creatorship of God. He made everything out of nothing, and as He spoke, a hundred billion creatures caught His breath.

I am also reminded that He is a God of His promise and does not speak in vain.

As the infinite Creator, He chases down my heart through all my failures and pride and longs to have a relationship with me.

If the stars and everything else in creation sing God’s praises, so will I.

5. What a Beautiful Name — Hillsong Worship

There are many names, but none is as beautiful and assuring to me as Jesus.

6. Who You Say I Am

Whenever I feel doubtful or tempted to question my worth, this song reminds me that who God says I am is who I am.

Who am I that the highest King would welcome me? I am a child of God. Yes, I am. I am chosen, not forsaken. I am who You said I am.

The price He paid to set me free proves my value and His love for me.

Key Message: Music has healing and transformative powers.
